PATIENT PROTECTION AND AFFORDABLE CARE ACT
The recently signed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act contain an enormous amount of information and a multitude
of changes that are effective 2010 through 2018.
Because of calls from our plan participants, we offer our understanding and administration on the following issue(s):
Dependent (Young Adult) Under 26 years old
The Affordable Care Act:
- Allows young adults under 26 years old to stay on their parent’s health care plan.
- Requires plans that offer coverage to children on their parents’ plan to make the coverage available until the adult
child reaches the age of 26.
- States this provision is effective for policy or plan years beginning on or after September 23, 2010.
The HSTA VEBA Trust health benefit plans:
- Currently allows dependent children age 19 through 23 years of age who are full-time students at an accredited school,
college or university to continue coverage under their parent’s plan.
- Next plan year after September 23, 2010 will be July 1, 2011.
- Effective July 1, 2011, will allow eligible dependents 19 through 25 years of age to enroll or continue coverage
under their parent’s plan, if the Trust plan continues after December 31, 2010.
